Critical Review on “One Day”

Critical Review on David Nicholls’ “One Day”

By: Merry Grace G. Dalapag

Significant Date

It was such a bizarre love story.“One Day” checks in on Dexter and Emma’s intersecting lives once a year. Life has its way of bringing them together for periodic updates. Some of these meetings are intentional, some accidental. Their chemistry is as inarguable as their differences, but because of the pride, carelessness and misplaced optimism of youth, they let time and distraction separate them. Yet they never lose track and meet each other every after July 15 ( which is also a St. Swithin’s day) for over 20 years. Which make the date even more significant.

It was such an inspirational story, one who is not so ordinary but appears to be realistic in nature. Thereafter, it catches up the annual updates charting the course of Dexter and Emma’s lives and to their continuing not always flourishing friendship. Which proves that for some unknown reasons there is an underlying harmony that persists despite the twist of fate – the two are still bound to find each other after a long run. Its amazing, right?Chances are really meant for those who deserve it the most. For with some people we are destined to become friends and meet even just once in a year.

What’s in the film?

“One Day” is a beautifully crafted movie. It has style, freshness, and witty bantering dialogue makes it appeal so good. It show the mystery of life . The story is quiet unique but it could really happen to any people in the world. I admire the way the story narrated in a rom-com manner it adds life to the story. Scherfig has orchestrated each short segment so the episodes flow smoothly together, making it feel of a whole rather than disjointed bits with costume changes. Scherfig makes the most of each segment, cleverly introduced by on-screen titles that blend into each new scene. However, ending is a little bit of disappointment for me because it was really unpredictable but it makes the story more natural.

Emma, an earnest, and hard-working girl from the middle class was brought to life by Anne Hathaway because of her being so attractive she was advised to sometimes play against type (the eyeglasses she wears at the beginning are a bit over the top). I really admire her timeless beauty. According to rumors Anne doesn’t suit the character because of her poor British accent. But I don’t believe in that it was just some sort of bugos information from unreliable source. While Dexter, a confident young man from the upper class was personified by Jim Sturgess . Jim really hit the nail. He contributes the film’s most versatile performance, one that depends on exact timing and control of the balance between pathos and buffoonery.

With two glamorous stars Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess and an appealing mix of romantic locations and the Focus Features the movie becomes seemingly attractive. The film is carefully crafted to make even its sad moments seem not all that bad, and it modulates its progress toward happiness without unseemly haste. However , the story unfolds as it must, it ends with the ideas of love and loss which is really heart breaking yet incredibly amusing.

The Way It Should Be

“One day” is certainly a great masterpiece which depicts an honest relationship and what life is really like. Sometimes we make friends, fall in love, lose people, there’s not always a happy ever after but the important thing is that you where able to share a portion of your life to someone special in your heart. This movie is a great inspiration to those who happen to watch it. And the lesson it gives to the viewers has the price of gold. If given the chance to be in the shoes of Nicholls, I will end the story the same way he did. Because life will never be called life itself if we haven’t experience lost and appreciate it the most.
